Two decades ago I learned from reading Stephen Jay Gould about the case of Carrie Buck, who was eventually sterilized against her will on grounds of feeble-mindedness. Eighty years ago the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8-1 in favour of compulsory sterilization in the case of Buck v. Bell. The lone dissenter on the bench was Catholic.
